It is one of the cars we have been lusting after for many years in India but to no avail. Yes, we are talking about Suzuki’s Swift Sport hatchback which is now towards the end of its second generation. Following in the footsteps of its standard sibling, which will be unveiled in summer 2017, there will be a new Swift Sport next year and it will, for the first time, sport a turbocharged petrol engine.
This engine is the 1.4-litre K-series mill and is expected to produce the same 138bhp. However, with a lighter body and revised five-speed gearbox, this new Swift Sport is expected to be much faster and quite a bit more nimble.
We already have an idea of what the next-generation of cars will look like (inside and outside) thanks to some leaked digital renderings earlier this year. It appears that Suzuki has retained the basic body shape but have added a whole bunch of curves and swoopy lines to bring its successful hatchback into modern times.
Given that India accounts for a significant part of the Swift’s sales, we can expect a desi location for the global debut of the standard hatchback. Based on this popularity, we sincerely hope that Maruti Suzuki will consider the next-generation Swift for the Indian market.
