Flying cars will soon come out from the fantasy world and move on to reality. Terrafugia is a renowned company, which has designed a particular type of car that has the potential to run on road as well as fly in the air. The company will soon offer this car to the anxious customers. This innovative car is named as the Transition, which will make its debut at New York Auto Show on 6th April 2012. Launching the vehicle on this platform is likely to help the company attract the masses towards its impressive futuristic model.

Anna Mracek Dietrich, COO, Terrafugia, said, “We selected the New York International Auto Show to continue the roll-out of the Transition because of the value this show brings in terms of exposure to future owners, investors, and partners.”

While developing Transition, the company faced many challenges both legal as well as technical. In July 2011, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) granted two exceptions to Transition. The first exception was to use polycarbonate in place of laminated glass that has made aircraft-style windshield light. Second approved exception was the incorporation of non standard tires in Transition for efficient movement on the roads.

Terrafugia also ensured that Transition can be also effectively used as an aeroplane. This vehicle took its first flight on March 5, 2009 and received approval from Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) in 2010. Similar to NHTSA, FAA also granted an exemption in favour of Transition to load extra 110 pounds weight for carrying airbags and other on-road safety advancements.
