Hyundai is planning to extend its production capacity of small car manufacturing in Tamil Nadu. It currently has its manufacturing plant in Sriperumbudur, near Chennai. The company has witnessed an increase of 40 percent in its sales in the first four months of current calendar year itself. It has started to assess its needs for a new plant or extension of its current capacity at its existing plants.

The current plant has a manufacturing capacity of 600,000 units. It has space to accommodate a paint shop and a body shop which can be linked to the current assembly line. It shall increase its capacity to 700,000. It can further manufacture another 30,000 units by working another shift and stretch its manufacturing capacity to 730,000.

According to the company sources, Hyundai has no plans to set up another plant currently. However, the same is not truly believable even by the employees as Hyundai shall soon cross its 730,000 sales figures in coming 2 to 3 years.

We do not have any plans for any other manufacturing unit at this point of time and if demand grows to the extent that we need another facility we will take a call when we get to that point,” says Rajiv Mitra, Head of Corporate Communications, Hyundai India.

Hyundai already has offer from Andhra Pradesh government to set up shop in the state. It makes sense of Hyundai to set up another plant in TN or Andhra Pradesh which would enable it to have components delivered in time and would also contribute to its exports from the Chennai port.
