Contrary to previous reports, the highly awaited successor to the Mercedes CLS will not be renamed to CLE but stick to the CLS moniker. Either way, this is our best look yet at the next-gen CLS which is due for launch in 2018.

Design wise, the changes will be evolutionary rather than revolutionary. That said, the prominent hip on the current model will be reduced for the new model and the taillights will also be horizontal rather than diagonal.

Under the hood there will be no more V6 motors. Instead, Mercedes will make use of in-line six units. The popular 2.1-litre four-cylinder motor will be replaced by a more refined 2-litre unit. Like in the new E-Class, the CLS will have two fairly big displays stacked side by side.

Unlike the current model, the next-gen CLS will be limited to a four-door coupe model. Expect it to go on sale in 2018, around a year after the two-door E-Class coupe.
