New Hyundai Tucson Preview

The latest generation of the Hyundai Tucson has arrived here in the Indian market, a year after its global debut at the 2015 New York Motor Show. Sporting a fresh design, good quality interiors and underpinnings that are far more superior than what we have seen in previous-gen Hyundai crossovers, the new Tucson is headed for launch later this year.

The new Tucson has been conceived using Hyundai’s Fluidic design language and as a result, it not only looks a whole lot more stylish than the old Tucson but also quite bigger. The front-end shows a hexagonal-shaped grille – a key element of Hyundai's design cues. The grille is complemented by LED twin-projector headlights and integrated daytime running lights. In profile, the extended wheelbase for more cabin space can be seen along with some nice looking alloys that are surrounded by forward-raking wheel arch design. Even the door handles feature LED lamps for a premium look. The new Tucson's roof rails are sleek and low-profile, for an integrated look. From the rear, a Z-shaped character line above the rear wheels accentuates the sporty side profile. The taillights are also made up of LEDs while the chrome exhaust tips and a rear spoiler complete the real look.

Inside, the cabin design is a little less futuristic compared to some of the other modern Hyundais, however, there is no denying that the quality is up there with the class best. The new Tucson is longer, wider and has a longer wheelbase than the previous model for greater interior volume and versatility. Both the front and the back are roomier compared to the old model and the boot is bigger as well.

Globally, the new Tucson is offered with a range of engine and gearbox options. The India-spec model though is likely to be limited to a 2-litre diesel engine with close to 180bhp and a dual-clutch automatic gearbox. The all-wheel drive Tucson will come with a driver-selectable AWD lock that allows a differentiated torque split between front and rear wheels, for off-road and slippery road conditions. The system also includes active cornering control, which automatically transfers torque to the wheels with the most traction.

For better sound deadening and lower NVH levels, Hyundai has added enlarged engine mounts, improved aerodynamics and more sound insulating material for the inner fenders, underbody, instrument panel and all the pillars.

Hyundai India is expected to launch the new Tucson before the end of this year. With prices ranging between Rs 16 to 20 lakh, the new Tucson will be seen competing with the likes of the SsangYong Rexton, Skoda Yeti and the Renault Koleos.
