South Korean auto maker Hyundai has been on a roll in India in the recent past. Despite challenging conditions in the market, the firm has managed to stay afloat, generating good revenues. In September 2013, India's second largest passenger car maker launched the much-awaited Grand i10 in the country. This hatchback, Hyundai's cheapest diesel offering in India, has generated an excellent response from customers and critics. Such has been Hyundai's performance that it has explicitly mentioned plans to overtake Maruti Suzuki in the next few years. Sources claim that the South Korean firm is hoping to do the same by introducing new models, which will be from different segments. Speculations are rife that the next generation version of Santa Fe Sports Utility Vehicle (SUV) is going to be launched soon in India.

Demand for utility vehicles has been rising in the country as compact SUVs like Renault Duster and Ford EcoSport have performed remarkable well in India. In addition, cars like Toyota Fortuner, Honda CR-V and Ford Endeavour have been doing well. Current generation of Santa Fe has not done as well as compared to other models. Sources claim that Hyundai is looking to capitalise on this rise in demand. According to reports, the South Korean auto maker is likely to unveil this model at 2014 Auto Expo, the largest automobile exhibition in India. Changes are likely to be made in the design and interiors of this new model to make it look more attractive.

Current generation Hyundai Santa Fe, despite not being among market leaders, has earned a lot of acclaim from critics and also won the award for 'SUV of the year 2011' from Business Standard Motoring. Exteriors of this car include features like projection headlamps, rear combination lamps, stylish side repeaters and Twin Exhausts. It is powered by a 2.2-litre engine that generates maximum output of around 195 bhp. Industry experts feel that the new Santa Fe is likely to retain the same mechanical configuration. Hyundai has always been appreciated for its high quality engines, superb interiors and efficient performance. When launched in India, this SUV will compete with Toyota Fortuner, Ford Endeavour, SsangYong Rexton, Chevrolet Captiva and Honda CR-V. Although nothing has been confirmed, rumours claim that new Santa Fe will come to India via Completely Knocked Down (CKD) route.

Industry experts feel that Hyundai's presence in the SUV segment is likely to benefit its rivalry with Maruti Suzuki. Although India's largest passenger car maker rules in hatchback segment, it has no considerable presence when it comes to utility vehicles. Seeing the demand, the auto maker will be launching XA Alpha SUV in India in 2014.
