Mahindra has been developing a new range of petrol and diesel engines for its compact range of vehicles. This is a joint project between Mahindra and Ssangyong for their upcoming vehicles. There will be six new engines in all.

The first couple of engines from this project include a 1.6-litre petrol and a 1.6-litre diesel both of which are four-cylinder units and are already powering the Ssangyong Tivoli. These will be exclusive to Ssangyong products. These engines are mated to six-speed manual and automatic transmissions. The automatic transmission on the Tivoli, an Aisin unit, was recently introduced in the XUV500.

The other two new engines are the 1.2-litre petrol and diesel engines that will be powering the new S101 (KUV100). These are three-cylinder versions of the 1.6-litre engine mentioned above. The 1.2-litre engines, meanwhile, will be used only on Mahindra products and will be coupled to a five-speed manual and an AMT gearbox. The AMT will be a Magneti Marelli unit.

The fifth engine is the 1.5-litre diesel. This engine is already christened as mHawk80 and is used on the TUV300; Mahindra will retain the rights for this engine as well. It produces 84bhp and is comes with a five-speed manual transmission and an AMT. This AMT is engineered my Mahindra with inputs from Ricardo.

There is also a new 1.5-litre petrol. Both Mahindra and Ssangyong will be use this engine which will produce 110bhp of power. Mahindra is likely to use this engine for its hybrid vehicles.
