General Motors plans to bring the diesel variants of its popular small car Chevrolet Spark in India. There are no details available so far about the technical specifications but the car is expected in the Indian market by the end of this year. it is expected that the car may be powered by sub 1L common-rail diesel engine and will probably be priced 15-20 percent more than its petrol model.
"The company is also currently working on alternate fuels, including diesel, for its small car Spark which may hit the stands in due course of time," said P Balendran, vice-president, corporate affairs, GM India.
GM India is also considering exports of small cars to countries like Sri Lanka, Bangladesh and Bhutan. It aims to sell these cars in West Asian, Latin American, Asia Pacific and the European markets. According to the sources, the company foresees these markets as fastest growing markets and intends to leverage its profits to pull out its parent company from the credit crunch.
