In view of the upcoming Ganesh Chaturthi festival, the Government of Maharashtra has waived off the toll on Mumbai-Pune expressway from between September 2 – 4 for travellers to the Konkan region. However, the exemption is limited to only residents of Mumbai and Thane. This will also help ease the congestion which is very much expected on the weekend before the festive period.

To avail the waiver benefit, Konkan travellers from Mumbai and Thane will have to visit their nearest RTO office or Traffic Police office to get a pass. The officials will hand over the pass only when the motorist gives details like residential address, vehicle registration number, address of place they intend on visiting in Konkan and mobile number. The decision was taken post a meeting at the Public Works Department minister, Eknath Shinde’s office.

Along with benefit to the regular traveller, the decision will also help motorists who have been affected by the recent bridge collapse at Mahad on the Mumbai-Goa highway. The festival being a vital part of local tradition, the move is indeed welcomed by travellers who intend to visit their hometown in Konkan for the festive period.
