Car manufacturers in India are planning to bring more cars with alternative fuel options like LPG and CNG. The move comes after customer’s reaction toward regulation of petrol and diesel prices in the market. Petrol and diesel have become costlier after the decontrol and there has been a rise in demand in the car market for alternative fuel cars.

Maruti, General Motors, Hyundai already have several variants in the market that run on CNG or LPG. Now these and other manufacturers are planning a slew of new launches in the Indian car market bringing CNG and LPG models of their best selling models. Maruti is planning to introduce dual-fuel variants of five of its cars.

Currently about 15-20 percent of the sales figure comes from alternative fuel models but industry expert anticipate the figures to go up quickly. “The shift will be faster to alternate fuels now,” said Ankush Arora, the sales and marketing head for General Motors in India. GM currently offers LPG on its Spark mini car and CNG on Optra and Aveo sedans. General Motors also intends to launch LPG model of its brand new small car model Chevrolet Beat in the car market.
