Cult classic car maker MINI is considering a serious foray in the proper SUV space with the new generation Countryman. The niche car brand has always enjoyed status of cool with its cult classic Cooper series but then the same has also made the brand very generic in front of its audience. The brand is working on a ‘larger’ SUV to make sure it competes with the big league rivals.

The team at MINI are already working on the new generation model as the earlier gen was a clear success as it dominated the sales chart for a great time. As claimed by Autocar UK, the new gen Countryman will be a brand’s answer to full size proper SUVs with the necessary ruggedness and strength. The brand has also made clear the new offering will not be a crossover or a hatch made to look tough.

MINI will base the new generation Countryman on the same UKL platform as the Clubman but will be more spacious and comfortable than the existing offering. Dimensionally, it will be longer by 150mm and wider by 10mm. This will translate to a grander legroom for second row occupants. It is still not clear if the new generation Countryman will be a tow-row or a three-tow SUV as the latter will clearly have more takers. It will get the same all wheel drive system which comes in 2-Series Active Tourer.

The engine options that MINI will offer in the new generation Coutryman will be similar to the existing range of the turbocharged 3-cylinder unit which makes a meaty 134 bhp, as standard. The 2.0-litre four cylinder configuration will make it in the spruced up S and John Cooper Works Editions.
