      Mercedes India to Ramp Up Production

      Indian car market is definitely booming and demand is on all-time high levels which also includes the luxury car segment. German luxury car maker Mercedes Benz is planning to ramp up its production at its Chakan plant near Pune. The company will soon commence the second shift at its Chakan manufacturing unit where it has invested more than Rs. 200 crores to meet the rise in demand of its vehicles.

      "We will be starting the second shift operations shortly at the Chakan plant... it has an installed capacity of 5,000 units per shift a year," said Mercedes-Benz India Management Board -Member (Sales and Marketing) Director Debashis Mitra.

      Mercedes has introduced 16 new models in past seven months and is all set to re-secure its position as the top luxury car maker in the Indian market by sales. Currently, BMW is the segment leader when it overtook Mercedes sales last year in 2009. This week Mercedes has launched the SLS AMG model priced at Rs. 2 crore to Rs. 2.5 crores powered by 6.2L engine capable of attaining 317 kmph. It also intends to launch a new SUV sports model in India before the end of this year. It sells Mercedes M Class priced at Rs. 50 lakh and above and Gl class priced above Rs. 65 lakh.
