Reports have suggested that, Mercedes-Benz in the UK, have applied to trademark a range of electric vehicle names from EQA to EQX. With this terminology, it looks obvious that MB is conceiving a new but separate set of brand terminology for its electric cars.

A glance at the suggested names make it apparent that the naming approach could be quite similar to the way Merc brands its SUVs presently (EQA vs GLA, EQC vs GLC etc). It seems like the first two letters, EQ, communicate ‘electric propulsion’, while the third letter specifies the model it relates best to, depending on the cars size (A-Class, B-Class).

Dieter Zetsche, CEO of Daimler, had earlier claimed that the brand would debut their first electric car at the Paris auto show in 2016. This vehicle would come under the new electric sub-brand and in all likeliness could be a crossover to begin with. Armed with a new set of vehicles and branding, Mercedes-Benz will finally have its own to fight competition from the BMW ‘i’ models, and Audi’s ‘e-trons’ versions, to name a few.

Mercedes-Benz now seems ready to take on the challenge in the EV segment, head-on.
