      Mercedes-Benz GLS vs Audi Q7: Spec comparison

      Audi had launched the new generation Q7 in India way back in December. Based on a new MQB platform, it is about 325 kgs lighter than its older generation. On the other hand, the recently launched Mercedes-Benz GLS 350d comes as a replacement to the GL-Class. Loaded with fresh upgrades and modern styling, both the cars are indeed strong competitors pitted against each other.

      Dimensions

      The Q7 is based on Audi’s new design philosophy that gets sharp angular headlamps that complements the large hexagonal grille. The vehicle also gets matte silver inserts at the front. In terms of dimensions, the Audi Q7 measures 5052mm in length, 2212 mm in width and 1740mm in height. The SUV has uses the Matrix headlamps with 30 individual light emitting diodes and three reflectors.

      In terms of length the new Mercedes GLS is slightly longer in length and height at 5130mm and 1850mm respectively. However, in terms of width its slightly lesser at 1934mm. As compared to the older GL, the new car looks more pronounced with chrome on the front-bash plate and slightly bigger grille. The rear bumper now gets a chrome strip.

      Equipment:

      The Audi Q7 gets an LCD screen on the dashboard, infotainment system and 19 speakers that pairs with all the devices. Additionally it also gets navigation, four zone automatic air conditioners and auto park technology with 360 degree view. The dashboard is made from brushed aluminium, while the lower section gets a walnut terra brow.

      The Mercedes-Benz GLS gets a 20.3cm (diagonal) display screen for the infotainment system. As for standard features, the car comes with panoramic sunroof, auto-dimming rear view mirrors and three-zone climate control. The chrome strip has been added to the rear bumper and complement the chrome tipped dual exhausts. The GLS also gets a GLS – AIRMATIC that allows you to raise the ride height for off-roading at just a press of a button. In terms of safety, it gets eight airbags, re-safe system, brake assist, electronic all-wheel-drive traction system 4ETS, ESP, and cruise control

      Engine

      The Audi Q7 is powered by a 3.0-litre TDI engine that generates 249bhp of power and 300Nm of torque. The eight-speed automatic tiptronic transmission comes mated full time to an all-wheel drive system. The Audi Q7 can sprint from 0 – 100kmph in just about 7.1 seconds and claims to return a fuel efficiencmy figure of 14.75kmpl.

      The Mercedes-Benz GLS comes with a 3.0-litre V6 direct injection engine that is mated to a 9G-tronic nine-speed automatic gearbox to generate 258bhp of power and 620Nm of torque. In comparison to the older model the new GLS claims to return have an improved fuel economy of about 15 per cent and enhanced 22 per cent of torque.

      Price:

      The Audi Q7 Q7 is available in two variants in India – the base variant Premium Plus, priced at Rs 72 lakh and the top-end, Technology, priced at Rs 77.50 lakh. Both the variants are powered by the same engine with the only difference being in terms of feature list.

      The new Mercedes-Benz GLS 350d has been launched at Rs 80.40 lakh. The bigger 450d and 550d options are currently not available in India.
