Just about a month after the end of a major worker’s strike at its Manesar plant, the country’s largest car maker Maruti Suzuki witnessed a big shocker from the side government of India on Monday. The government of India has said that the MSI’s demand of signing a ‘good conduct bond’ from the workers was an "arbitrary act.” The statement of the government adds that forcing workers for this bond amounted to "unfair labor practice".

In a statement, labor and employment minister Mallikarjun Kharge said, "Demanding of good conduct bonds from workers as per conditions before allowing them to resume work is an arbitrary act and it also amounts to unfair labor practice as given in the Industrial Disputes Act, 1947.” The statement from the Labor & Employment minister came as a written reply to the question asked by Gopinath Munde of BJP and Gurudas Dasgupta of CPI in Lok Sabha.

The minister added that Haryana Government had reported that management of Manesar plant had imposed a condition of submitting good conduct bond by workers for entering the unit as there was reported widespread indiscipline by workers and acts of sabotage and production of defective vehicles.

It is to be mentioned here that the Indian auto giant Maruti Suzuki had locked its workers out of the plant, maintaining that only those who will sign the bond can enter the plant in the month of September 2011.
