Maruti Swift Dzire outsells Alto in July to reclaim top spot

Maruti Suzuki India’s popular compact sedan, Swift Dzire has emerged the highest selling car in India in the month of July. With 18,634 units of Dzire sold last month the compact sedan reclaimed first spot toppling its petite sibling Alto that roped in 16,997 unit sales in July 2014. Alto that had been topping the sales chart for long slipped to the second spot in May this year as it lost its numero uno position to Dzire. In July Alto garnered almost half the sales it registered in previous month which is alarming for MSI.

The list of top ten cars sold in July includes five cars from the stables of Maruti Suzuki India, three from South Korean auto giant Hyundai and the rest two belong to HCIL. Sales trend clearly shows customers’ inclination towards aggressively priced compact sedan and premium hatchbacks. Number of hatchbacks making it to the top 10 selling list has been reduced to six (including A and B segment cars) in July 2014 as compared to seven at the same time last year.

This shows a gradual shift in customer preference for bigger cars available at affordable price. The affinity for small cars priced below 4 lakh is dying as customers are more interested in upgrading to either a premium hatchback or compact sedan.

Reason behind this abrupt change could be the availability of competitively priced compact sedans and premium hatchbacks in India. There is a possibility of newly launched Zest making it to the top ten selling cars list next month. Launched at an introductory price of Rs 4.64 lakh the sedan has many reasons to lure customers to the showroom.

However it will be interesting to see if Swift Dzire will be able to maintain its position in upcoming months as competition is getting stiffer in CS segment.
