Until now Maruti Suzuki products in India had been limited to a five-speed manual transmission. Moving a step ahead, the company plans to launch a new six-speed gearbox codenamed the MF30. Reports further indicate that the new Swift hatchback will be the first one to offer a six-speed gearbox followed by other products in the company’s lineup.

It is believed that the new six-speed transmission will deliver better fuel efficiency figures and reduce the engine stress. Apart from technological advantage, the new six-speed transmission will help the company strengthen its competition against its rivals such as Hyundai, Renault and Tata who offer six-speed gearbox options on specific models.

In the past, Maruti Suzuki had been offering a six-speed unit in the 1.6-litre diesel variant of the S-Cross in India. However, with recent launch of S-Cross facelift which is limited to 1.3-litre engine, it is offered with a five-speed manual transmission only. More details on the new six-speed transmission will be known in the days to come.
