NEW DELHI: Car market leader Maruti Suzuki India (MSI) will add two new compact cars to its portfolio in 2008. MSI will roll out its fifth world car, currently called concept A-Star, in India in October next year. The A-segment car will also be exported to Europe and will be showcased for the first time at the Auto Expo in January.

It will sport a 1 litre, Euro V-compatible, aluminium engine. The manual transmission for the car will be manufactured by Suzuki Powertrain India, a Suzuki subsidiary.

Besides the A-Star, the company is also planning to introduce another global model Splash to India. The Splash will be powered by a 1.2 litre petrol and 1.3 litre diesel engine. To be launched in Europe and other overseas markets next year, the Splash will also be an A-segment car and will be produced at Maruti?s Manesar plant.

Suzuki Motor chairman Osamu Suzuki said: ?Our focus on the Indian market is reflected by making it the sole manufacturing hub for our forthcoming world car A-Star that will be exported worldwide. It will roll out from the Manesar plant in October 2008. Coming from the same family, the premium hatchback Splash will also be manufactured in India and will be available in the Indian market by mid-2008.?

It will produce 1.5 lakh units of the A-Star of which one lakh will be exported to Europe under the Suzuki badge and the rest will be reserved for the domestic market. However, the company has not made up its mind about a Japan launch just yet. ?We have an array of mini-cars in Japan and have no plans to launch A-Star there,? Mr Suzuki said.
