With its Figo, the American car maker Ford has set a benchmark in the hatchback segment of Indian market. The car has managed to challenge the market leader, Maruti Suzuki's Swift for the slot. Launched in 2005, the Swift had caused quite a stir with its unique styling. Although the Swift still generates strong sales for Maruti, Figo has done well too and posed a challenge, with demand outpacing the supply.

On the engine front, both models come equipped with units which are made to perfection. The petrol model of Swift comes with a 1.3L, 16 valves Multipoint Fuel Injection (MPFI) units which deliver 113 Nm of torque at 4500 rpm. Whereas, the Figo comes with 16V DOHC engine delivering 102 Nm of torque at 4000 rpm.

In diesel variants, Swift again wins with its 4-valves DOHC (Dual Over Head Cam) Diesel engine delivering 190 Nm at 2000 rpm and a top speed of 158 kmph. While the Figo diesel model is driven by 1.4 litre Duratorq TDCi unit, which churns out 160 Nm at 2000 rpm.

Talking about features, the petrol model of Swift comes with Zxi trim whereas the diesel model is devoid of any such features. On the other hand, Ford offers identical package of feature in both the variants.

Both the models come replete with all the basic features like music system and remote key less entry etc. On the other hand, diesel model of the Swift seems to be lacking them. The interiors of the Figo are much better compared to the Swift.

Both the cars come with a wheelbase of 14 inch. However, the Swift doesn't perform well on a bumpy road as compared to the Figo which is capable of treading the potholes comfortably. The chassis of the Ford model is an excellent one providing perfect mix of ride and handling. Swift excels as per as handling is concerned but the Figo too is not too far behind.

The transmission kit on the Ford model proves to be uncomfortable in the beginning whereas the gearbox on Maruti's hatchback feels perfect. Figo feels bit hard to steer at low speed but gains sensitivity at it attains speed. As far as braking is concerned, both cars scores high.

The winner is the hatchback from American automotive giant with its low price and wide range of features. Swift, on the other hands loses out on the grounds of its built quality.
