Maruti Suzuki India Limited (MSIL), the country's largest passenger car maker, is believed to be readying a new entry level subcompact hatchback called 'Cervo' for a 2013 launch in the domestic market. Top industry experts believe that the yet-to-be launched Maruti Suzuki Cervo small car will be pitched below the company's current cheapest offering, the Alto 800 entry level model in the country. The upcoming small hatch is generating a significant amount of buzz in the entire automobile industry and is expected to come with a retail price tag close to Rs. 1.5 lakhs.
Accordingly, with such humble pricing, the Maruti Suzuki Cervo can be dubbed as a direct rival against the likes of Tata Nano entry level subcompact model in the Indian auto market. With the entry level Cervo model, the company looks set to target the domestic two wheeler owners who aspire towards upgrading to a decent and affordable car. From the initial spy shots, the small car looks basic with neat looks and styling, a considerable improvement over the boxy Tata Nano.
Speaking of under-the-hood specifications of Maruti Suzuki Cervo, the entry level small car is expected to come fitted with a 0.8 litre petrol engine that produces a peak power output around 50 bhp, along with a maximum torque delivery close to 70 Nm. Sources suggest that the upcoming cute Cervo model could see Indian daylight carrying a retail value lesser than that of Tata Nano. At present, Tata Motors offers its Nano model within a price bracket of Rs. 1.5 lakhs to Rs. 2.15 lakhs.
