We all know that Maruti Suzuki India is working on its new low displacement diesel engine that will be equipped in the upcoming light weight commercial vehicle codenamed Y9T. Now according to a latest report, besides this 800 cc, twin-cylinder, turbo diesel engine, the company is also developing a four-cylinder diesel motor that will be used in company’s future products. Based on the modular architecture, MSI will bring forth a 1.5 litre diesel powertrain for the Indian market, while a 1.6 litre motor is also being built for the European market. The 1.5 litre, four cylinder diesel engine also fits the criteria of the low excise duty levied on sub-four meter cars in India, hence we will get to see more of vehicles from MSI housed with the new diesel motor in future.

Presently, MSI sources 1.3 litre Multi-jet, diesel engine from Fiat, this engine is employed in a number of vehicles from MSI’s portfolio including Maruti Swift, Maruti Swift Dzire, Ritz, Ertiga and the newly launched Ciaz. The 1.3 litre, Multijet diesel engine used by Maruti Suzuki India in its cars outputs maximum power of 74 Bhp at 4000 RPM along with top torque of 190 at 2000 RPM. Highly renowned in its league, the diesel engine is capable of delivering impressive fuel economy. Along with MSI cars, the engine also powers other cars in India. With the introduction of new 1.5 litre, diesel powertrain, it is likely that in future we will get to see less of Fiat sourced engine in Maruti Suzuki India’s cars.
