Suzuki Chief, Osamu Suzuki, stated that Maruti is facing tough competition this year in the Indian market. Maruti Suzuki India Limited has ruled the Indian car market especially in the small car segment since past few decades. "Presently we are seeing a lot of auto companies penetrating the Indian market. We are having severe competition at the moment," he said. Next 12-18 months see launch of at least 5 new small car models from various car manufacturers including Volkswagen, Nissan, Chevrolet, Toyota and Honda. Of these, Chevrolet has already launched Beat, Ford has introduced Figo and Volkswagen has brought its small car market Polo in the Indian market.

The company is developing a completely new car that has been exclusively designed, developed and manufactured in India. Suzuki Motor Corp will be investing $553 million to develop research and development capacity as well as engine capacity in the country. The amount will be spent on these two activities and the sum will be equally split.
