Maruti Suzuki India is testing its new 800cc diesel engine, which will be used by a LCV and Celerio hatchback. The company will launch the Celerio diesel in the Indian car market in the first quarter of 2015. Currently, the small car is available in petrol and CNG fuel options. The inclusion of diesel variants will offer buyers more options, and will surely help the maker to increase sales in the market.

The Suzuki Celerio diesel has been spotted several times during its test rounds on Indian roads. It is expected to be Maruti’s first ever car to feature the company’s own diesel powertrain. The oil burner is the 80cc, twin-cylinder unit that is reportedly develops around 50bhp of power. This smaller engine is also expected to be the country’s most fuel efficient car, which is currently ruled by Maruti Ciaz.

Initially, the Celerio hatch will get a five-speed manual transmission version driving the power to front wheels. However, the company is also contemplating an AMT (automated manual transmission) version of the compact car. The company recently introduced the new Alto K10 with AMT gearbox, which is the country’s most affordable automatic diesel car.

The Maruti Suzuki Celerio diesel is expected to be priced in the range of Rs. 4.5-5.5 lakh. It will take on the likes of Chevrolet Beat, Ford Figo and Hyundai Grand i10. The vehicle is expected to go on sale in this financial year.
