Maruti Suzuki has launched the facelifted Alto 800 in India to take on the Renault Kwid, Hyundai Eon and the soon to be launched Datsun Redigo. While we wait for the newest entrant in the segment, here is a look at how the Kwid and Eon fair against the updated Alto 800.

      Exterior:

The Alto 800 is the smallest of the three cars with a length, width and height of 3,430mm, 1,490mm and 1,475mm respectively. The Eon is only marginally bigger in terms of length and width, measuring 3,495mm and 1,550mm; but it is the tallest at 1,500mm.

The Renault Kwid looks like the largest car in the segment with dimensions measuring 3,679mm, 1,579mm and 1,478mm respectively. Even in terms of wheelbase it is the largest at 2,422mm compared to 2,360mm and 2,380mm of the Alto and Eon respectively.

      Interior:

The Alto 800 and the Kwid have the basic grey coloured interior, while Eon is the only one in the segment offering a beige coloured trim. We don’t expect many features in this segment, but among the three, it is the Eon that comes out on top. It has all four power windows, tilt adjustable steering wheel, adjustable headrests and plenty of cup and bottle holders.

All the three cars offers 2 DIN music system in the top-spec trim, but the one in the Kwid is a touch-screen unit with navigation. There are hardly any safety features in any of these cars – the only equipment available being the driver-side airbag. However, where Hyundai and Renault offer it only with the premium variants, Maruti offers it as an option from the base model for an additional Rs 6,000.

      Performance:

The Hyundai Eon is the most powerful of the three cars producing 55bhp and 75Nm of torque from the 800cc unit. In capacity, the other two are similar as well, but the Alto 800 produces just 48bhp and 69Nm, while the Kwid delivers 53bhp and 72Nm.

All three cars are available only with five-speed gearboxes, powering the front wheels. The ARAI fuel efficiency of the Eon, Alto 800 and the Kwid are 21.1kmpl, 24.7kmpl and 25.17kmpl respectively.

      Price:

The Alto 800 is the least expensive of the three cars with price in the range of Rs 2.49 lakh to Rs 3.76 lakh. The Kwid comes second with pricing between Rs 2.62 lakh and Rs 3.67 lakh. The Eon, then, is the most expensive of the three priced starting Rs 3.25 lakh and the top-spec costing Rs 4.39 lakh.
