India's largest carmaker, Maruti Suzuki will introduce a new compact hatchback (codenamed YL7) at the Delhi Motor Show next month. This hatchback is rumoured to be named Celerio and it will get an Automated Manual transmission. For the first time, such transmission will be used in cars in India, and with this the company aims to attract urban buyers across the nation.

This Automated manual gearbox has been named 'EZ Drive'- Easy drive. This automated manual transmission will remove the clutch pedal from the hatchback, which offers an automatic feel to its driver. Its low cost of manufacturing and easy gear shifting like any automatic version is the main highlight of this gearbox. Moreover, the Celerio AMT is claimed to be 5 per cent more fuel efficient than the regular manual version.

Driver can shift gears either sequentially or fully automatically without using the clutch. This model is expected to be priced little higher than the regular manual transmission, however, it will be much cheaper than the automatic model.

Under the hood, the Maruti Suzuki Celerio will have the same 1.0-litre, 3-cylinder, K-Series petrol mill, powering the existing A-Star. This engine is capable of churning out a maximum power output of 67bhp and 90Nm of peak torque. With this engine, the vehicle will deliver a fuel efficiency of over 20kmpl.
