It was long feared that the use of manual transmission in supercars might end at any point of time. The thought has come true with supercars manufacturer Lamborghini deciding not to continue with the age old manual mode of transmission since the fact that future supercars will come with only automatic transmission.
World’s renowned supercar producer stated that the current Gallardo will be their last car model to be equipped with a manual transmission. Its upcoming supercar models like Murcielago successor, Aventador and still to be named Gallardo successor will all feature automatic transmission.
The Italian supercar giant’s Gallardo is expected to be unveiled by next year and will be embraced with the same transmission as employed in Aventador which comes with a 7 speed, dual clutch AT.
Currently Italian transmission manufacturer, Oerlikon Graziano, makes transmissions for the luring Lamborghini supercars comprising of the Aventador also. The rumor market started to boil when Paolo Mantelli, Automotive Transmissions Chief, Oerlikon Graziano, surprised the auto world by replying to a question on the future of manual transmission. He said “There will always be a market for manuals in Europe as long as legislation allows them, but it is interesting that we are now being asked to design AMTs [automated manual transmissions] that don't have a manual option.”
To justify the answer, Maurizio Reggiani, R&D Director, Lamborghini, explained the motto of the decision that “can’t rely on a driver to always shift gears without glitches.” Among most of the Lamborghini cars in the auto market, a mere 1-2 per cent of them are imparted with manual transmission, he added. He also insisted that the change will not have any effect on the buyers as they won’t be able to recognize the same.
