      Mahindra XUV500 and Tata Safari - The consistent players in the Indian SUV market

      SUVs are the recent craze in India and there have been a number of cars launched in this segment. While some of the major game changers in this segment have been old names who constantly went upbeat with time, while some others were the new entrants. More of the Indian population have become interested on going for trips on their personal cars. This has resulted in the popularisation of SUV because these cars are the ones meant for consistent performance and long road trips. Two such cars, which have been extremely popular in the SUV circuit, are Tata Safari and Mahindra XUV500.

      Mahindra XUV500 is priced at 15.1 lakhs INR while Tata Safari has been tagged slightly lower at 10.2 lakhs INR. XUV500 comes with a 2179 cc 6V mHawk Diesel engine, which churns out 140 bhp at the rate of 3750 rpm. The torque output of the car is 330 Nm at the rate of 1600 to 2800 rpm. On the other hand, the Safari is charged by a 2179 cc 16V DICOR engine. The maximum power output of the car is 138.1 bhp at the rate of 4000 rpm and the torque output of the car is 320 Nm at the rate of 1700 to 2700 rpm. While Safari comes with a five-speed manual gearbox with FWD option, the XUV500 is provided with a six speed gearbox with AWD option.

      The Safari is capable of reaching up to a maximum speed 160 kilometres per hour and does a 0 to 100 kilometres per hour in a respectable 15.8 seconds. On the other hand, the XUV500 is capable of reaching a maximum of 175 kilometres per hour with a 0 to 100 dash in 12.5 seconds. Fuel tank capacity of Safari is 65 litres while XUV500 edges past it with 70 litres. With XUV500 giving a city mileage of 12 kilometres per litre on cities and 15.1 kilometres per litre on highways as compared to the 8.32 kilometres of Safari on cities and 11.57 kilometres on highways; XUV500 is definitely a step ahead of Safari.
