We reported earlier that Mahindra will launch the updated XUV 500 SUV in the Indian car market this year. The SUV has been on sale since 2011, and is asking for makeover. Ahead of its possible launch in May, the pictures of the updated XUV 500 have been leaked on the internet.

Going by the images, it is visible that most of the changes are given to the front fascia of the XUV 500. It is equipped with a new chrome grille, flanked by new two-part headlamps with "L" shaped chrome inserts. The area below the headlamps also gets chrome treatment. The new bumper features a faux aluminium skid plate that adds to its sporty character.

The side profile of the SUV largely remains the same, except for the few changes to alloy wheels and body cladding. The flared wheel arches have been fitted to newly styled 10-spoke alloy wheels, which look sportier than the outgoing model. At the rear, the vehicle remains unchanged. The SUV gets extra chrome garnish on the licensing plate to add some premium touch.

Mechanically, the SUV is likely to remain unchanged. Under the bonnet is the existing 2.2-litre four-cylinder diesel engine that churns out a maximum power output of 140bhp and a peak torque of 330Nm. This engine is paired to a six-speed manual gearbox. Mahindra is also working on an automatic variant of the SUV, which is likely to go on sale by this festive season.
