Mahindra Two Wheelers, the motorcycle division of Mahindra Group, has announced its aggressive plans of launching 10 new models in the Indian auto market in the next couple of years. Expressing his views on the same, the President (Two wheeler sector) and Member of the Group Executive Board at Mahindra & Mahindra, Anoop Mathur was quoted as saying, “We will be coming out with 10 new models at least in next 2 to 2.5 years; we are almost working on an average to come out with a new model every three to four months. We are moving in the right direction and indeed you will start seeing some of them in the next few months itself; ....a completely redefined style line Mojo, 300cc bike will be released during the Delhi auto expo in February 2014.”

Reportedly, the new models planned for two years will span across the motorcycle and scooter category. On this, he said, “We are working on both the categories at the same degree of emphasis- as the market demands.” When asked about the sales for new models, Mathur said, "Our sales propensity today is much higher than we can meet, what we are doing therefore is we are ramping up our capacity;...we are investing in enhancing the capacity further- so as to raise the bar further depending- because of the fact that there is unfulfilled demand for our products.”

He said that the auto maker will be producing more than 1,000 bikes each day, equating around 25,000 to 30,000 units per month. “In this industry, increase in capacity happens in step function and our first milestone is going to a 50 per cent higher than this- by the end of November,” he added later. It must be noted that Mahindra & Mahindra has a plant at Pithampura near Indore. On its association with overseas brands, Mathur was quoted as saying, “We are always open to any strategic partnership with anybody who in working with us can enhance the value of the business or for the customer or for the share holder. That does have to be a financial arrangement it can even be a participation in technology sharing, it can be in the form of supplier-client relationship.”

Speaking on the export plans of the company, he said that the Mahindra Two Wheelers seems quite aggressive in the upcoming future, owing to its strong potential. The company want to soon grab an export share of 20 per cent as Mathur said, “..our immediate plan is to first go 10 per cent and very soon go to 20 per cent- it could happen in couple of years.” Speaking on the similar lines, the Vice President (Sales & Customer Care) for Mahindra Two Wheelers, Dharmendra Mishra said that the auto maker is planning to take the total count of its dealerships to 1,400 by the end of ongoing fiscal and 2000 by fiscal 2015.

Industry experts are of a view that the launch of a new models in two-wheeler space is touted as a good move. It will not only pull in volumes for the company but will also help it in carving a niche among the leading players of the segment. Interestingly, the Indian two-wheeler marketer is currently dominated by Hero MotoCorp, which has a number of models in its portfolio.
