Mahindra and Mahindra is planning to introduce its Thar SUV once again in the Indian market. The model was taken off-roads in 2000 but the company is once again planning to target the off-roading niche market with its SUV donned with a new look. Mahindra has already ramped up its production facility in Mumbai and will introduce the new model within one month.

Mahindra Thar is expected to be priced between Rs 5.5 - 7 lakh and the company is betting big on the product in the light of the changing lifestyles of the younger generation. The soft-roof vehicle will be powered by a 2.6 litre turbo-charged engine and is basically a derivative of global Commander Jeep.

“This is a niche, retro-styled product and there will be a lot of young buyers and Jeep fans for such a vehicle,” a Mumbai-based dealer said on condition of anonymity. The vehicle will be sold in soft top and hard top versions. A company spokesperson said, “As a matter of company policy, we do not comment on any of our future plans or products.” M&M will be driving the Thar into the market space created by the cut down in production of the Maruti Gypsy in the same category.
