The much awaited Mahindra 4X4 has been launched in the Indian market on Tuesday. Named as Thar CRDe, the new retro-looking sports utility vehicle (SUV) is aimed at the offroading enthusiasts and retro look seekers in the country. The Mahindra Thar has been offered in two variants including Thar CRDe 4x4 BS IV and Thar DI BS III that carries a price tag of Rs 5.99 lacs (ex showroom Delhi) and Rs 4.47 lacs (ex showroom Jaipur), respectively.
Briefing the reporters at the launching ceremony, Mr. Rajesh Jejurikar, Chief Executive, Automotive Division, Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd, said, “Having realized the potential of this emerging segment of off-road enthusiasts and lifestyle seekers, we have launched the Thar in India. The Thar is an extension of our legacy and what Mahindra stands for. Popular amongst generations of off-road enthusiasts, style seekers and even war-veterans, not many vehicles share the same legendary past and iconic status of the Mahindra Thar.”
The powerful 2498 CC, NEF CRDe Turbocharged Inter-cooled engine of Thar is capable of delivering a 77.23 kW of maximum power along with 247 Nm of peak torque. The Thar model is driven by an advanced wire technology that provides it with variable speeds and acceleration. The transmission is five-speed manual and a two-speed gear reduction (HIGH 1.0:1, LOW 2.48:1) has been offered with the help of Borg Warner - Manual Shift transfer case.
The lower priced Thar DI BS III variant has specially been designed to be placed as a lifestyle vehicle for the rural market. The Thar DI model will be available in both 2 and 4 wheel drive options.
The new Thar 4X4 will be rolled-out in Delhi, Chandigarh, Bangalore, Mangalore and Jaipur by the end of this month, followed by its launch in the rest of India by next month.
