The largest utility vehicle manufacturer in India, Mahindra & Mahindra has been making plans to gain a bigger chunk of the fast growing Sports Utility Vehicle (SUV) segment in the market. In the next two years, the car manufacturer is planning to expand its portfolio by adding three new variants to its line-up. Out of the upcoming three models, one would be an all new valued based hatchback, an elongated four row utility vehicle and a compact SUV. Several new products will also be launched under the SsangYong badge, which is the South Korean subsidiary of Mahindra & Mahindra.
Mahindra & Mahindra is gearing up to the launch a next generation model of its flagship Scorpio SUV in 2014. This model will be equipped with a diesel powertrain that will be capable of producing a maximum power output of 140 bhp. The powertrain will come mated to a six speed transmission unit that also serves on the XUV500. However, the next generation Scorpio will retain its value for money proposition and remain a big favourite among Indian masses.
The next model in tow is an entry level hatchback, codenamed C101, which is currently in its development phase. Mahindra & Mahindra is planning to position this model in the entry level B Segment of hatchbacks and is expected to cost around INR 4 lakh. The car manufacturer is also planning to launch a sub-4 metre compact SUV, which will be designed on the same platform as that of C101 and is codenamed as S101.
Apart from these models, the leading utility vehicle manufacturer will also promote the SsangYong brand in India. The company's South Korean subsidiary is gearing up to launch a completely new SUV that is codenamed as X100 and Rodius in the country by 2015. Besides, Mahindra is also set to launch an entry level variant of its most successful model, the XUV500 in the Indian auto market. This new model will compete with the likes of Renault Duster and yet-to-be launched Ford EcoSport.
