Indian home-grown company, Mahindra & Mahindra will be joining hands with its Korean partner SsangYong Motor to develop a new range of petrol cars, meant for Indian auto market. Since the cars of Mahindra & Mahindra are only available in diesel options, it is planning to develop a petrol engine, which is essential for its future plans in the country. As reported, the Indian company is figuring out plans with SsangYong to manufacture 3- and 4-cylinder engines that will have varied outputs.

Speaking on the future strategy of the company, Pawan Goenka, Executive Director, Mahindra & Mahindra was quoted as saying, “The writing is on the wall, we cannot remain a diesel-only manufacturer. That won’t work, not just in India but not even for the global aspirations that we have. In fact, I do see some slowdown in diesel demand and therefore we have to have strong petrol engine options available.” He further added “We are currently working on two engines, a three and a four cylinder, coming out of the same platform. These would be mainstream engines for our petrol driven UV range and would power vehicles much smaller than what we have today.”

He also rubbed aside the rumours that Mahindra & Mahindra will be developing the petrol powertrains based on the diesel ones, as the company had earlier adopted this policy. He said that the new engines will raised up from scratch and even asserted that compromises were made the quality of petrol engines as they were derived from diesel ones. However, as of now the company will be developing separate and independent petrol engine that will offer a superior performance.

Till now the company has refrained from giving an expected date for launch of petrol powered cars but it is expected that a 3-cylinder 1.2-litre compact SUV will first make inroads in India but not before 2016. Mahindra & Mahindra operates in the utility vehicle segment with its model like Scorpio, Bolero and XUV500. However, these cars are only available in diesel variants and Mahindra & Mahindra has now sensed the need of including petrol powered ones as it will safeguard the company from any further vulnerabilities of diesel car market.
