Drivers in Delhi have become smitten with Sports Utility Vehicles (SUVs), which are known for their massive proportions, macho looks and tremendous road presence. Residents of the national capital are on a buying spree, booking huge numbers of SUVs, thus increasing the already burgeoning volumes of these sporty passenger vehicles on city roads. According to a survey conducted by Metrolife, the most popular SUVs in Delhi are Mahindra XUV 500, Toyota Fortuner, Honda CR-V and Tata Safari.

Mahindra & Mahindra's new flagship model, XUV 500, hit the roads in September 2011 and has enjoyed unmatched popularity in the domestic market since its debut. Even M&M was taken off guard by the unprecedented demand for the car. According to Gulshan Makhija, Senior Manager of the company, the 25000 units of the model were booked in just 7 seven months, due to which it decided to put off any more orders. He conceded that the car maker had not anticipated such tremendous demand for the new car.

Makhija points out that most of the people who book XUV 500 fall within the age group of 30 to 40 years, including 1/3rd female buyers. He commented that the women who book the model do not intend to give to the men in their lives. According to him, “These are highly-paid corporates, salaried class or businesswomen, and believe in flaunting their affluence.”

Other SUV manufacturers also said that they have seen the sales of SUVs surge. Anuj Singh, an official at an authorised Tata dealership, said that Tata Safari and other SUVs made by the company are gaining traction. According to him, his outlet has registered two fold sales volumes in 2012 against those of last year. He pointed out that most of the SUV buyers are contractors, property dealers and politicians. The sporty and reliable models suit politicians, since they can travel through rough rural areas for campaigning quite easily, while their aggressive and macho looks suit property dealers, who are known for their aggressive nature.

SUVs are also becoming popular among family men who do not mind shelling out a few extra bucks for the luxury and comfort provided by these bulky vehicles. As per Dharmendra Singh, Deputy Manager, Indian Oil Corporation, he is considering a SUV as he wishes to ensure that his family enjoys a pleasurable drive on road trips. He added, “They are spacious, accommodate a lot of baggage and have ample leg room. I am sure the kids will be the happiest.”

Along with the adults, students, mainly college-goers, enjoy the experience of dominating the roads with a SUV. Regarding this, Surpreet Singh, who studies at Delhi University, quipped, “You have no idea what fun it is to drive into the college premises in my Pajero. All eyes rest on me and my mean machine. Of course, guys look forward to being friends with you and even girls request rides.” When questioned about the fuel costs he bears, the youngster commented, “My papa is a businessman.”
