Leonardo DiCaprio - the gentleman from the well-known film 'Titanic' is not only a great actor, but a great thinker too who would elegantly nudge the shell to promote sales of electric cars for a sustainable environment. Other benefit of this move is the development of technologically advanced electric cars for a reduced carbon print on the planet. Indeed, the news being discussed here is that the Hollywood actor has recently co-founded a Monaco-based team with the businessman Gildo Pallanca Pastor, owner of Venturi Automobiles that makes electric cars. He has backed a team, which will participate in the Formula E (a new electric motor racing championship) that will kick-start from 2014. The actor, on this endeavour, reportedly said, “The future of our planet depends on our ability to embrace fuel-efficient, clean-energy vehicles.”

Alejandro Agag, Chief Executive of Formula E holdings, praised DiCaprio’s interest and participation. He reported said, “Very few environmental leaders have helped more than [DiCaprio] to spread the message of sustainability around the world. Having people like him and Richard Branson – global ambassadors for the environment – is a privilege for our championship and will greatly help us to spread the use of electric cars in cities around the planet.”

The Formula E championship that will begin in Beijing in September 2014 nurtures noble goal of giving a much-need push to the electric car market. It also aims to encourage manufacturers to come ahead and invest for newer advancements and innovations in the sector. Notably, there are several companies that have already invested in Formula E. Few such names are Renault, McLaren and Michelin. Also, apart from Beijing, this racing series will also be conducted in other famous cities like Los Angeles, Miami, Buenos Aires, Berlin and London.

Interestingly, Formula E is backed by the European Commission. It will be overseen by Fédération International de l’Automobile (FIA). In its first year, participating teams will be competing with cars having same specifications. Post that, the auto makers would be prompted to enter the competition with their own electric car versions.
