Sources reveal that Land Rover’s upcoming Defender should debut globally in 2018, and this is a rendered image which portrays a distinctive but retro-inspired look.
Ever since Land Rover ceased production of the Defender earlier this year in January, the market anxiously awaits the successor to this legend. But, what makes the Defender such a legend? While the Defender was developed from the Land Rover Series (inspired by US-built Willys Jeep), it dates back to the year 1948! With over two million Defenders to have rolled off Land Rover’s production line over the last 68 years, it’s quite apparent why this vehicle has such a fan following.
The base for this digital rendering of the Defender was taken from Land Rover’s DC100 Sport concept which was first unveiled at the Frankfurt Motor Show in 2011. At that time Land Rover confirmed that the concept displayed would eventually replace the Defender.
Externally, the new Defender could get round projector head lamps with LED technology, and the traditional Land Rover grille surrounded by an aluminium cladding. This rendering also depicts the flared front fenders which hide the enormous off-road tyres, and also show the classic shape of the windows and doors which unmistakeably lead to an aggressive stance.
The new Defender may make it to showrooms in a two-door, four-door, and a pickup with both two and four-door body-styles. Land Rover could equip the new car with the latest ‘Ingenium’ diesel unit along with their recently announced ‘Transcend’ gearbox.
