Lamborghini India, the Italy based super luxury sports car maker, seems all set to cash-in on the increasing number of high net worth individuals of the country. Reportedly, the auto maker is planning to almost two-fold its sales in a few couple of years. Following the ambitious target, Lamborghini has inaugurated its second dealership in the national capital and is now looking ahead to open a new showroom in Bangalore. Expressing his views on the latest development, the President and CEO of Automobili Lamborghini SpA, Stephen Winkelmann was quoted as saying, “The high net worth individuals, who are our target customers, are fast growing in India... In the coming years, we expect our sales here to be about 30-40 units a year.”

He further added that in 2013, the company is targeting to deliver more than 20 cars in India, against the 17 units sold during last year. It must be noted that the company sells two of its iconic models, namely Gallardo and Aventador, both of which are priced between Rs. 2.8 crore and Rs. 6.3 crore (ex-showroom, Delhi). Reportedly, the company targets first generation entrepreneurs, which are aged between 30 and 40 years and second generation businessmen. Winkelmann said, “Customers in India are one of the youngest in our global markets, much younger than those in Europe.”

He, however, said that the taxation and infrastructure facilities are not so favourable in India. “More Indian nationals buy our cars abroad, especially in Europe... Here in India the traffic, road condition are not so suitable," he said later. Speaking on the overall slowdown in the Indian auto market, which has impacted on the company's sales, he said that Lamborghini is quite optimistic of increasing its share in the market. "We are in the niche super sports car segment; it is disconnected from the general car market. The high-end is not so much impacted," he was quoted as saying.

Amid a number of challenges, Winkelmann said the Italian auto maker is currently busy in expanding its overall presence in the Indian auto market. He added, “At present, we are in discussion for a third dealership. Bangalore is the city where we intend to open.”

On the global perspective, in 2013, Lamborghini is planning to sell more than 2,000 cars, which it delivered in 2012. Without disclosing exact figures, the company said that US and China happens to be the top two auto markets for the company, which are then followed by Middle-East, UK and Japan.
