Labour troubles seems to be getting over for Hyundai Motors India Limited (HMIL), the country's largest exporter of passenger cars, as the ten day strike by a group of disgruntled employees at its Sriperumbudur production unit has come to an end. The decision to call off the strike came after a meeting participated by management, employee's union and Labour Commissioner at Sriperumbudur, which lasted more than five hours.

Reportedly, a group of upset workers with support from Hyundai Motor India Employees Union and affiliated with CITU were on strike since October 30, 2012. The prominent issue has been identified as reinstatement of suspended employees, with some other demands as well. The meeting was presided by Labour Commissioner – B. Chandra Mohan, where the angry protesting workers were asked to “withdraw the illegal disruption of work unconditionally and return to their duty from the first shift of November 9, 2012.”

An official statement of HMIL said, “The principle of no work no pay will apply to all workers who abstained from work during the said period and the workers have been advised not to indulge in any work disruption in the future and also to settle all issues through amicable discussions.” Reportedly, senior management of HMIL has agreed to annul the suspension orders of 20 dismissed employees, while starting domestic enquiries against five workers.

The company has also confirmed agreeing to the terms and conditions of a revised wage settlement between its management recognized - United Union of Hyundai Employees (UUHE) and HMIL management. Further, around 450 people are expected to resume normal work at the Sriperumbudur production facility from November 9, 2012. The management has also affirmed that it will not start any sorts of proceedings against those employees who refrained from work.

At present, Hyundai Motor India, the country's second largest passenger car maker, has two production units at Sriperumbudur, with an annual yield of more than six lac units.
