Jaguar, the British automotive brand manufacturing luxury and sports cars, is mulling plans to locally assemble its high end executive saloon, Jaguar XF in a bid to position it competitively in terms of price for the Indian auto market. The 2012 Budget release pronounced a sharp jump in the custom duties, discouraging the import of cars in the country. Since the duty on cars assembled from Completely Knocked Down (CKD) kits remains untouched, several automakers have resorted to assemble its high selling models locally.

In fact, Jaguar emerges as one of the hardest hit brand to be affected by the import duty surge, which has posed a constraint in placing the executive sedan, Jaguar XF price competitive as against its immediate contenders, BMW 5 series, Audi A6 and Mercedes-Benz E class that are locally assembled.

The assembly unit of the Jaguar XF is anticipated to be located in the same facility in Maharashtra, where Land Rover Freelander SUV is assembled. The local assembly of the saloon would enable the automaker to introduce in the Indian auto market its lower end variants such as Jaguar XF 2.2 to intensify the rivalry against BMW 520d, Audi A6 2.0 TDi and Mercedes E220 CDI.

In India, post the 2012 Budget release, the assembly of CKD units cost 30 percent customs duty on cars with pre-assembled gearbox, engine and transmission and in case, even these components are imported as CKD units, then the custom duty imposed is equivalent to a meager 10 percent.
