The Isuzu MU-7 SUV, known as the Alterra in the Philippines, was seen on road tests in different parts of the country. Previously, it was thought that this vehicle would be available only in 2014, but going by the testing, the SUV may just be available in 2013. When available, it is expected to compete against the Toyota Fortuner, Ssangyong Rexton and Ford Endeavour.

Power in this vehicle is expected to be delivered via a 3.0 litre 4 cylinder turbo diesel engine. Maximum power output is speculated as 144 bhp, with a peak torque of 360 Nm. The MU-7 would be driven either by a 5-speed manual or 5-speed automatic transmission. In the initial phase, it may be available only in a 4x2 variant, but Isuzu could bring in the 4x4 variant at a later time.

The MU-7 would be capable of accommodating 7 adults with ease, along with their luggage. It would also get safety features such as ABS, traction control, ESP and airbags. The SUV would be available as a CKD (Completely Knocked Down) unit, which would help to keep costs down. Expect the price of the MU-7 to be in the range of Rs. 15-20 lakhs.

In the future, manufacturing units would be set up in Nellore, within Andhra Pradesh. This plant would require an initial investment of Rs. 1000 crore. Reportedly, the company is also trying to work out a solution with Mitsubishi in Chennai for the India operations since Mitsubishi globally has a share of 9.2 per cent in Isuzu Motor Limited. Another option is also to look at the SML plant in Chandigarh.
