      India Witnesses Robust Domestic Sales Growth in January

      The New Year has started with smiles for the auto makers in India. Nearly every auto manufacturer has posted double digit growth in the past month. Maruti Suzuki India Limited, the largest car manufacturer in the country, witnessed 33.3 percent sales growth in January at 95,649 units. It posted robust sales in both A2 and A3 segment at 24.8 percent and 36.5 percent respectively. Maruti’s A2 segment cars include Alto, Wagon-R, Zen, Swift, Ritz and A-Star while A3 segment comprises of SX4 and Swift Dzire.

       

      Tata Motors sales grew by 77 percent which includes exports, passenger and commercial vehicle sales. It sold 65,478 vehicles in January 2010 over 36,931 vehicles in the corresponding period last fiscal. The domestic sales were about 74 percent higher at 62,202 units in January 2010 against 35,704 units sold in January 2009.

       

      General Motors also more than doubled its sales figures reporting highest ever monthly sales in over 13 years of presence in India. It sold 9421 units last month as compared to 3937 units sold in January 2009. "Introduction of two best-in-segment cars, increased customer outreach through distribution network, our unique value proposition like Chevrolet Cashless Offer on the Spark are the factors that have led to this month-by-month escalating growth rates," said P Balendran, Company Vice President.

       

      India’s second largest car manufacturer, Hyundai Motors India Limited, registered 40.8 percent growth in domestic sales figures and 42.6 percent growth in exports figures. HMIL’s total sales for January, 2010 stood at 52,635 units as against 37,171 units in January, 2009 registering 41.6% cumulative growth. “We have started the year on a right note and we hope the momentum will continue with the help of the stimulus package offered by the government,” said Arvind Saxena, Director – Marketing and Sales, HMIL.

       

      Honda Siel Cars experienced a little set back in the month of January due to its faulty switches in its cars around the world. It also announced that it will be recalling 8532 units of Honda City 2007 models in India as well. However, such a hiccup did not deter the company in posting healthy sales growth in the country. It witnessed 3.64 percent growth in India with sales of 5983 units in January 2010 against 3773 units sold in the same month last year.

       

      India’s leading two-wheeler manufacturer, Hero Honda reported 23.57 percent growth 3,89,802 units in January 2010 as compared to 3,15,458 units sold in January last year. It is the highest ever sales figures during January by the company.

       

      TVS Motor Company has posted a significant 34 per cent growth in two wheeler sales for the month of January 2010. It sold 125,578 units in the last month against 93,729 units sold in the same month last year.

       

      More sales figures from auto makers like Skoda, Audi, Mercedes, Volkswagen, Toyota are yet to pour in.
