Sale of medium and commercial vehicles has largely dipped in the country in the last few months, with some of the companies reporting a decline of more than 30 per cent. The dip in sales is largest since the peak of recession in 2008-09, when all the sectors were hit.

Automaker Ashok Leyland reported a decline of 36 per cent in sales of its commercial vehicles, excluding small sized commercial vehicle Dost, in November 2012. The sales figure for November stood at 4,487 units compared to 7,061 units in the same month a year ago. Dost, however, continued the upward trend with a total sales of 2,883 units as against 814 units in November 2011. The overall sales of the company including that of Dost fell by 6 per cent to 7,730 units compared to 7,875 units in November 2011.

India's largest commercial vehicle manufacturer Tata Motors reported a 40 per cent dip in its sales in November 2012. The sales figure for the company's commercial vehicles during the month stood at 9,495 units, as against 16,000 units in November 2011. This sharp decline in the sales of Tata Commercial vehicle is the largest since February 2009 when the company witnessed a decrease of 48 per cent in sales revenues.

The automobile manufacturer, VE Commercial vehicles (VECV), on Monday, December 3, 2012, reported a dip of 31.92 per cent in its total sales, which stood at 3,150 units in September this year. The company had sold a total of 4,627 units in September 2011. The company in a statement said that its domestic sales declined by 27.11 per cent to 3,026 units as against 4,152 units in the corresponding months last year. The sale of company's buses, however, increased by 11.27 per cent to 612 units compared to 550 units in the same month last year. As is clear from the above figures, the sale of commercial vehicles has largely decreased in India in the past few months.
