      Indian car enthusiasts are famous across the globe for their obsession with fuel efficient and low maintenance demanding automobiles. At present, the domestic passenger car market is flooded with several interesting propositions in the compact hatchback segment. CarTrade.com looks at some of the most promising options boasting of big mileage, which are currently offered to the local audience.

      Heading the list is the world renowned hatch that comes from the end of Tata Motors, the Nano. Tata Nano is the undisputed champion in terms of fuel efficiency ratings and delivers an eye popping mileage of 25.4 kmpl. The company has worked tremendously hard in increasing its engine performance, besides maintaining both fuel efficiency and CO2 emissions at optimum level. Currently, Tata Nano comes within a price range of Rs. 1.40 lakhs to Rs. 2.30 lakhs.

      General Motors Chevy Beat comes second after Nano in terms of fuel efficiency. Evidently, Beat hatch is the American auto majors' best selling product in the Indian passenger car market and contributes to a major fraction of its total sales. The Chevrolet Beat is offered in both petrol and diesel powered guises and delivers an extremely impressive mileage. The petrol Beat boasts off a best-in-class fuel efficiency of 18.6 kmpl, whereas its diesel variant delivers at output mileage of around 25 kmpl. The combination of an aggressive pricing (Rs. 3.5 lakhs to Rs. 6 lakhs), superb mileage and segment defining looks have helped the company in making its compact model such a huge success among the local car enthusiasts.

      Next in list is another model that comes from Tata Motors' is, the Indica eV2 hatch. The company's top selling model delivers a great power and torque performance from under its hood, along with equally impressive fuel efficiency. Indica eV2 can run through 13.6 km and 17.2 km in city traffic and highway conditions, respectively, on a single litre of petrol. The Turbomax diesel variant offers great mileage as well, at 19 kmpl and 14.5 kmpl on highways and city limits, respectively. Tata Motors' Indica eV2 is available in the domestic auto market at a price ranging between Rs. 3.5 lakhs and Rs. 5.3 lakhs.

      The premium hatchback Toyota Etios Liva also gets a mention in our list of country's most fuel efficient hatchbacks. The trendy and sporty looking Etios Liva boasts off an exciting mileage from its engine, in both petrol and diesel guises. The petrol variant delivers a fuel efficiency of 18.31 kmpl, while its diesel sibling offers an even more compelling mileage of 23.59 kmpl. At present, the Japanese auto giant offers its Etios Liva hatch to domestic car enthusiasts between price tags of Rs. 4.2 lakhs and Rs. 6.5 lakhs.

      Maruti Suzuki’s 'tall boy' premium hatch, Ritz has also garnered some rave reviews for its power and torque performance, along with an impressive mileage from its K Series engine. The petrol variant of Ritz can run for 18.6 km on a single litre of petrol, whereas its diesel version delivers even better fuel efficiency at 22.9 kmpl. Maruti Suzuki retails its Ritz premium hatch at price tags starting from Rs. 4.5 lakhs, which goes on till Rs. 6.7 lakhs in the country. The vehicle carries along with it a sporty demeanour, which has helped the auto maker in promoting the vehicle as a car having both style statement and value-for-money quotients.
