In order to reduce the pollution levels across the country, the Indian government has been in favour of leapfrogging from BS IV to BS VI skipping BS V norms. The idea is to implement this change by 2020. This move was announced by the petroleum ministry as they are looking to introduce more clean fuel. As per the current plan, the idea is to have BS V from 2019-20 and BS VI from 2021-22.
The auto industry finds the rollout of BS VI rollout by 2021-22 as unrealistic and states it will be under more pressure as the government is becoming more and more sensitive towards green technology. "We will take a decision in the meeting. We have received view from different departments. Representatives from petroleum and heavy industries have been called so that a consensus is reached to implement the environment-friendly fuel norms," stated a senior ministry official.
The BS norms are similar to the Euro emission norms. The Euro VI norms came into effect in Europe from September and are a lot tougher on pollution levels. With these emission levels, the emission gap between petrol and diesel vehicles is reduced.

The timeline fixed won't be tampered with," said the senior ministry official.
