The team of Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay has designed a fully electric racing vehicle, named as Evo2, which has been termed as the only Indian car to have both the rear wheels powered independently and monitored by electronic differential. Reportedly, with this innovative technology, the required torque is provided to each wheel of the car and assists different wheel speeds. The car introduced by the team of 70 design engineers from the IIT-B will last the 22 km testing at Formula Student, a known educational motosport competition organised in Europe.

The racing team of IIT-B is headed by Sonam Motwani, which started working on this concept in July 2012. It completed the designing of Evo2 in around three months and did the final assembling in the next two couple of months. The main centre of concentration for the team was to develop a racing car, which had zero emission and come up as an eco-friendly model. Expressing his views on the development of Evo2, Motwani was quoted as saying, “There is an increasing demand for sustainable development. Belonging to a premier engineering institute of India, we felt it was our responsibility to create a vehicle that met this demand. EVo2 is a manifestation of our dreams.”

He further added that EVo2 is an updated model of its erstwhile generation, EVo1, on the grounds of acceleration, weight reduction, manoeuvrability and reliability. Interestingly, this new model is all prepared to show its credentials at the Formula Student and represent India. It must be noted that Formula Student is an innovative competition, which aims to develop and inspire the young engineers. In this competition, the judging committee demands a reliable, easy to maintain and high performance model. On this, the IIT-B team was quite confident and said, “Our car meets all these standards. We look forward to having an amazing run at the Formula Student 2013 event and make the country proud by waving the Indian Flag at the finish line.”

In last 20 days, the Evo2 has gone through rigorous testing and the top speed of the model is 100 kmph. The model was showcased at the VMCC auditorium at IIT-B on June 3, 2013 by the Consulting Director at the Institute of Mechanical Engineers, Prabal Sarma. The launch ceremony was then followed by the presentation by the the chief sponsor of Evo2, NRB Bearings.
