Hyundai Motor India Limited (HMIL), the country's second largest passenger car maker, is believed to developing a new i20 based compact sedan for its domestic clientele. The upcoming compact sedan from stables of the South Korean multinational auto giant seems like an interesting proposition against the likes of segment leader Maruti Suzuki Swift DZire and Mahindra Verito. The compact sedan could see Indian daylight somewhere around the last quarter of 2013 calendar year.

The yet-to-be launched Hyundai i20 hatch based compact sedan is expected to be developed on the similar lines of Maruti Suzuki's Swift and Swift DZire models, complete with a boot-on-hatch design. Likewise, the Hyundai compact sedan could come assimilated with same under-the-hood configuration that can be found in the i20 premium compact hatchback. Accordingly, the compact sedan is anticipated to come fitted with a sub 1.5 litre power-mills in both petrol and diesel guises, which could roll out a power and torque equation close to 85 bhp and 150 Nm, respectively.

Coming to exterior design, the upcoming Hyundai i20 based compact sedan is likely to be introduced in a sub 4 metre length avatar. The compact design will enable the car to enjoy a cut in excise duty rates, which could significantly result in an attractive end pricing.

At present, Maruti Suzuki Swift DZire is the market champion in compact sedan segment of the Indian auto market and faces little competition from Mahindra Verito CS, Tata Indigo CS. The Swift DZire is retailed within a price bracket of Rs. 5 to 7.5 lakhs in the country, whereas Verito CS is offered to local audience in the price range between Rs. 5.3 lakhs and Rs. 7.3 lakhs. Further, top industry experts have pinned the upcoming i20 based compact sedan to be launched within a price bracket of Rs. 5.5 to 7.5 lakhs. Hence, an intimidating face off is expected between Maruti Suzuki Swift DZire and Hyundai i20 based compact sedan in the coming future.
