Hyundai Motors has revealed its first full-speed electric vehicle BlueOn in Korea. The model was first showcased at the Delhi Auto Expo 2010 earlier this year but the model on display in Delhi was not expected to be launched in India. The new model displayed in South Korea is the actual production ready model that will hit the markets there by 2012. The new BlueOn will be powered by batteries made by SK Energy and is based on Hyundai’s i10 hatchback. Hyundai said the electric car would run 140 kilometres in a single charge.

"We are taking a baby step. There is no infrastructure such as charging stations in Korea and many other countries," spokesperson of Hyundai was quoted as saying. The top speed of BlueOn is 130 kmph. It can be charged with a 220 V outlet, a standard outlet in many Asian countries including Korea. BlueOn’s battery can charge itself upto 80% when charged via 380 V fast charging station.

The name ‘BlueOn’ derives from Hyundai’s Blue Drive strategy, which encompasses the company’s eco-friendly products and technologies. The word ‘On’ symbolizes “switch on,” said official press statement from Hyundai.
