Hyundai Verna has always been a popular name in the sedan segment. This time around, the Korean car manufacturer will further strengthen its foothold in India with the launch of a new Verna on 22 August. Here below, we have compared the Verna against the Creta as the former will be priced nearly the same as a few of the variants of its SUV counterpart. The upcoming Verna will be available in four variants and gets 1.6-litre petrol and 1.6-litre diesel engine options. The Creta, on the other hand is offered in a total of seven variants and one petrol 1.6-litre and two diesel 1.4-litre/1.6-litre engine options.
The entry level Verna E will be slightly cheaper than the base Creta E trim which is priced at 8.92 lakhs (ex-showroom, Delhi). Mechanically, both the cars get a 1.6-litre petrol engine. However, the Verna scores additional pointers as it gets a bigger 1.6-litre diesel in comparison to the 1.4-litre engine offered in the Creta. The Verna gets halogen headlamps, chrome front grille, day and night rear view mirror, metal finish on inside door handles and auto down (driver only), while the Creta base on the other hand gets a set of 16-inch steel wheels shod with 205/65 R16 tyres, 2-Din audio system with four speakers, keyless entry and lane change indicator. Both the cars are fairly even in terms of features, however, the diesel variant of the Verna emerges as a better option.
The Verna EX progresses a step ahead and offers parking assist, five-inch touchscreen audio steering wheel with audio controls and manual AC with cluster ionizer. The EX variant also gets a rear AC vent, leather wrapped gear knob and steering wheel, auto up-down (driver only), cruise control and a clutch footrest. The vehicle will compete against the Creta S variant which gets front fog lamps and rear defogger, front and rear silver skid plates, luggage lamp, 5-inch touchscreen infotainment system with steering-mounted audio and Bluetooth control, height adjustable drivers’ seat and adjustable rear seat head restraints. The Creta S is priced at Rs 11.09 lakhs (ex-showroom, Delhi), and is limited to a smaller diesel engine besides a petrol engine option. Moreover, the trim is limited to a manual transmission while the Verna EX has petrol and diesel engine options in manual as well as automatic transmission.
In addition to the features in the EX variant, the SX trim gets electro chrome rear view mirror, projector headlamps, cornering lights, LED DRLs and positioning lights. The SX also gets LED taillights, R16 diamond cut alloy wheels, electric folding mirrors and a seven-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay, Android Auto and MirrorLink. The Creta SX priced at 11.97 lakhs lacks the petrol engine option once again, but gets a larger 1.6-itre diesel with a manual transmission. The Verna SX gets manual transmission as a standard in petrol, while diesel gets an optional automatic.
The top spec Verna SX(O) in addition to all the features from the lower variants additionally gets smart key, rear defogger with timer, chrome outside door handles, leather door centre trim and auto link. The diesel variant is limited to manual transmission, while the petrol variant is available in manual as well as automatic. The vehicle competes with the top-spec Creta SX(O) which comes loaded with 17-inch diamond cut alloy wheels (215/60 R17), full size spare alloy wheel, side and curtain airbags, electronic stability control with hill assist control, height adjustable seat belts, speed-sensing auto door locks, chrome door handles, rheostat, leather upholstery and 7-inch touchscreen. However, the top spec Creta SX(O) priced at Rs 13.94 lakh is limited to a 1.6-litre diesel in manual transmission.
On the feature aspect, both the cars rank more or less the same. However, the Hyundai Verna does emerge as a better choice as it offers a bigger diesel engine right from the base variant along with an automatic option in EX and SX(O) variants in petrol, while in diesel it is offered in the EX and SX variants. That said, the buyers for both these cars will have distinguished options to choose from and one will not affect the sales of the other. In the long run, Hyundai expects to receive an impressive cumulative sale figure from both the cars. The Verna customer is the one who always loves the comforts of driving around in a sedan, while the Creta is purely for those who like the big car feel.
