Hyundai Sonata phased out; new model on cards

Hyundai, the South Korean automaker, is aiming to launch the new generation Sonata sedan for the Indian car market. The company has already launched the new Sonata in select international markets; however, Hyundai India is yet to announce the new generation model for our market. Interestingly, the company has already removed the sedan from its official website in India; indicating that the saloon has been phased out from the market. The reason could be the poor sales performance or the maker is planning to bring the new model soon.

The latest generation Sonata was launched in 2012 and is expected that the new model will go on sale by the end of this year or early next year. The current model is only available in petrol version; the lack of diesel variant is the main reason behind poor sale of this luxurious saloon in India.

Hyundai India is currently selling less than 20 units of the Sonata sedan each month for a long time, and the maker finally decided to remove the sedan from its lineup. If media reports are to be believed, the maker is also considering the Sonata Hybrid for Indian market to rival against the likes of the Camry Hybrid.

The current generation Hyundai Sonata is powered by a 2.4-litre petrol engine that churns out a maximum power output of 198bhp at 6300rpm and a peak torque of 250Nm at 4250rpm. Both manual and automatic variant of the sedan was offered in India.
