Hyundai Motors India Limited handed over 30 cars to Mumbai Taxi Union in a ceremony organized at the Modi Hyundai dealership in Mumbai. These cars are Hyundai’s best selling models – Hyundai Santro and will run as taxis in Mumbai now.
Nearly 50,000 black and yellow taxis in Mumbai will now be replaced by these new vehicles. In the first run, these 30 cars will run as taxis in Mumbai and the remaining ones will be gradually replaced. This was decided by the Taxi and Autorickshaw Welfare Sangh.
This new move by the taxi and Autorickshaw Welfare Sangh is in line with government’s rule of phasing out 25 year old vehicles from the city. The first phase ending December 2009 will witness nearly 7000 models to be phased out from the city.
Commenting on the occasion, D. C. Seol, Sr. GM, national sales, HMIL, said, “Santro is a low-maintenance vehicle with lots of interior space and we are happy that the Taxi and Autorickshaw Welfare Sangh has also chosen the Santro for its fleet of cars to be used as taxis. We want to make a breakthrough in the Mumbai taxi market and hope to start it with the Santro.”
